How was your experience with the mock cross-examination at Battle of the Experts 2021? Don’t be shy!

I honestly thought that it was fantastic because it took on a sense of “realness” even though it was simulated.

Managing Engineer, Biomechanics

Exponent

What is your area of expertise?

I’m a biomechanical engineer providing injury causation and human motion (kinematics) expertise. My subspecialty is in injuries to the eye, but those cases don’t come along terribly often, so I also frequently provide expertise on injuries to the brain and spine.

How did you become an expert?

I went to school for a really, really long time, and then I stuck around for postdoctoral research work to really focus on the biomechanics of the eye. I also spent some time interning on the science desk of a daily newspaper. Though I loved communicating science and engineering topics, there are very few science journalists at newspapers these days. Although I returned to the lab bench at the end of my internship, my drive to communicate complex topics eventually led me to join Exponent as a consultant.

Please, engage your experts early on! The sooner you loop us in, the sooner we can help evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of your case, make sure the right information is requested before discovery closes or evidence disappears, and help ask the most pertinent details during depositions of fact and other expert witnesses.

How was your experience with the mock cross-examination at Battle of the Experts 2021? Don’t be shy!

I really appreciated the opportunity to present to a room full of seasoned attorneys and jurors and to hear their feedback, particularly in contrast to the presentation style of the opposing witness. The shadow jurors didn’t hold back (and I appreciate that!) about what they did and didn’t like about my style. It was great food for thought about how to approach a topic in the courtroom.

Civil Engineering construction cases focused on construction injury and contract disputes with the ability to estimate and evaluate costs.

How did you become an expert?

I was recruited by Robson Forensic while actively involved in the construction and development industry.  My previous experience as a fact witness in construction dispute litigation provided me insight into the expert witness world.

Tell us one thing that clients can do/provide to make you a more effective witness?

Strong communication!

How was your experience with the mock cross-examination at Battle of the Experts 2021? Don’t be shy!

My experience was memorable and very, very valuable!  I actively use the insight gained from my interaction with other leaders in the industry that attended the Battle of the Experts and the mock jury’s feedback on my testimony.

Technical Lead, Construction

Envista Forensics

What is your area of expertise?

I am a civil and structural engineering expert.

How did you become an expert?

After approximately 10 years of experience with the structural engineering design of various structures and structure types, I joined a forensic engineering firm in Colorado. Since that time (over approximately the past 12 years), I have worked exclusively as a forensic engineering expert.

Tell us one thing that clients can do/provide to make you a more effective witness?

One thing that clients can do to make their experts more effective is to provide them with a clear understanding of the client’s needs and expectations as early as possible after the expert is retained. Often these needs and expectations are not fully known or understood at the time that an expert is retained, but clear and open communication with the expert regarding what is needed is critical.

How was your experience with the mock cross-examination at Battle of the Experts 2021? Don’t be shy!

I was anxious at the beginning because I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, but quickly got my feet under me once the questioning got underway. I completely enjoyed the experience and found the feedback from the mock jury on both my own testimony style and the styles of the other experts to be very illuminating and gave me insight regarding how others perceive forensic experts.
