Trent is a trial consultant who helps his clients answer the question: What’s a jury going to think about my case? Trent helps his clients see their case from a juror’s perspective by identifying the strengths and weaknesses in their story. Then, he helps clients adapt their story to emphasize the strengths and minimize the weaknesses. Trent performs customized consulting projects and services such as; mock trials, focus groups, venue surveys, witness preparation consulting, and jury selection assistance.
In the past 17 years, Trent has assisted trial teams with hundreds of matters venued in 43 states and two U.S. Territories including such well-known battlegrounds as Los Angeles County, The Southern District of New York, Cook County, Illinois and The Southern District of Florida. He has extensive experience in the areas of assessing and developing case strategy, identification of juror attitudes and beliefs, juror profile development and jury selection, witness preparation and conducting post-trial juror interviews.
Prior to starting Chicago based Kelso Trial Consulting in 2008, Trent worked for 10 years as a trial consultant at DecisionQuest, where he was a Vice President and headed the firm’s Chicago office. In 2006 Trent joined FTI Consulting, where he headed the firm’s national jury consulting practice.
Mr. Kelso’s civil litigation experience spans nearly every type of litigation and includes antitrust, professional malpractice (medical, legal, and actuarial) intellectual property (patent, trademark, trade dress, trade secret, and copyright), product liability, personal injury, real estate and construction defect. Some of his most notable experience involved patent litigation in the medical technology industry, and multi-district pharmaceutical product liability. Representative clients include Delta Airlines, Pepsi, Papst Licensing, Appleton Paper, Microsoft, The Pritzker Organization, Schlumberger, Genentech, MasterCard, American Airlines, Lockheed Martin, Pfizer, Verizon, Ford Motor Company, Goodyear Tire & Rubber, Morgan Stanley, Ernst & Young, Alstom, BNSF, Liebherr, United Technologies, and Nestlé. Representative law firm clients include Hunton & Williams, Vinson & Elkins, Kirkland & Ellis, Quinn Emanuel, Sidley Austin, Robins Kaplan, and Neal, Gerber & Eisenberg.
Mr. Kelso has spoken on topics related to juror behavior and trial strategy at numerous professional conferences including meetings of the American Bar Association, The Defense Research Institute and The Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel.
Prior to entering the field of trial consulting, Mr. Kelso was an in-house management consultant for Kaiser Permanente, one of the nation’s largest managed-care organizations. At Kaiser, Mr. Kelso assisted physician-managers, administrators and executives implement and evaluate quality of service and quality of care initiatives.
Mr. Kelso received his B.A. in Speech Communication from San Diego State University and his M.A. in Psychology from The Claremont Graduate School in Claremont, California
